William: Hey there, folks! It’s William and Madison back with another exciting grape to explore. Today, we’re going to talk about Merlot, a grape that’s as smooth and reliable as an electric go-cart.
Madison: Right on, William! When we look at Merlot wine, its color is usually a beautiful ruby red, deep but not as dark as Cabernet Sauvignon. Imagine it like the red color of Santa’s suit at Christmas!
William: Merlot, like many of our favorite grapes, comes from France. It’s a historic grape, and just like the stories of knights and castles, it’s full of interesting tales.
Madison: Merlot is used in a couple of ways. It’s often blended with Cabernet Sauvignon to make Bordeaux-style wines. But it also does great on its own as a single varietal wine, kind of like how I love being part of the cheerleading team but also enjoy my solo ballet practices.
William: Good one, Madison. Now, for the smells, Merlot often gives us aromas of juicy black cherries, plums, and sometimes a little bit of chocolate. It’s almost like the time we helped mom bake those black forest cakes. Yummy!
Madison: Absolutely, and just like characters in our favorite video games have different skills, Merlot can taste different based on where it grows. It can be soft and fruity, or it can be more structured and earthy.
William: That’s right! And did you know Merlot is often blended with Cabernet Sauvignon? It’s kind of like when we combine our different Lego sets to make something even cooler!
Madison: So true, William. And even though we can’t taste the wines, by looking, smelling, and learning how they’re made, we get to uncover a lot about them. It’s like the thrill of putting the final piece into a puzzle, William.
William & Madison: That’s a wrap on Merlot! Stick with us on KidSomm.com for more grape adventures. We’re making wine learning as exciting as a Disney Cruise!
